This is a large and impressive Arts and Crafts Coal box made by renowned metalsmiths Benham and Froud of London, the underside marked with their signature of an orb after the one atop Saint Paul''s Cathedral, made by the company in 1821.
The box is hand made and hand hammered in copper with the repousse motif of a sinewy flower in the arts and crafts style on each side.
The box stands 46cm tall from the ground ti the top of the lid, and 35cm tall without the lid. It measures 41cm handle to handle and 33cm at the base, so it really is a large and fine example.
The box comes in a good condition with surface wear commensurate with its age. If you study the photographs, you will note the surface wear and dings that make up this piece, but personally I like them and think that it adds to its character.
I have cleaned the coal box, but not polished the copper to leave its patina, so that the buyer may choose whether they prefer it shiny or with this more matt appearance.
As me
...ntioned there is the company emblem of an orb to the underside, and also a further identification mark of a flower made up of six circles around a larger one which denotes which foundry and workshop the box was created in.
If you''d like any further information, please don''t hesitate to get in touch.
I should also mention that this is quite a heavy item, so it might be best collected or delivered in person rather than posted, but nothing is impossible and I will always find a way to get it to you that you''re happy with, should you be interested.
