Primitive 18th Century Westcountry Windsor Chair

18th century
Description

A superb example of a primitive Windsor chair. It dates from the late 18th Century and most likely originates from the Westcountry. It has a hoop back enclosing spindles with a curving arm supported by turned spindles. It has a solid flat fronted fruitwood seat and stands on four simple turned legs joined by a H-stretcher. It is a good comfortable chair, sturdy and well made. The patina on the seat is stunning and the chair has a fantastic look with layers of original paint and stain attractively worn away over the years.

It is approximately 42" (107cm) high and the arms are 24 1/2" (62cm) wide. The seat is 15" (38cm) deep and stands 16" (41cm) high.

It is in very good condition for its age and is strong and sturdy. There are signs of historic worm in the top of the hoop and in the seat which has all been treated as a precaution and hasn't affected the chair structurally or aesthetically. There is a small old repair where the hoop joins the arm and of course it is not without signs of age and use but nothing detrimental and it displays beautifully.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
