Antique English Georgian Hepplewhite Style Mahogany & Burgundy Red Leather Office Desk Arm Chair (Circa 1880)

19th century
Description

Here is a fine quality antique English Hepplewhite style Victorian mahogany & burgundy red leather armchair, circa 1880, which has been newly upholstered, in excellent condition.

Summary:

• Item: Armchair

• Circa: 1880

• In the style of Hepplewhite period (c. 1775 – 1800)

• Provenance: England, UK

• Wood: Mahogany

• Shield back design

• Fluted centre pierced back splat

• Carved wheat central motif

• Moulded vertical rails

• Stuff over seat design

• Newly upholstered seat

• Top quality full grain burgundy red leather seat

• Foliate carved cabriole front legs on ball & claw feet

• Sabre rear legs

• Original polish

• Good quality

• Solid in joint

• True set (not matched together)

• Free delivery to England, Wales & southern Scotland*

• Free 14-day UK returns policy

The armchair is constructed of solid mahogany and features a moulded shield back design; incorporating a central carved wheat motif pediment above five finely executed pierced fluted splats, flanked by moulded vertical rails. The back is secured to the seat by splayed moulded arms, raised on shaped vertical supports. The stuff over seat has been newly upholstered in top quality full grain burgundy red leather, with traditional hessian material to the underside. Therefore, the seat is in excellent and clean condition, with no marks or signs of wear and tear. The seat is firm, but comfortable; you do not sink into the seat. The armchair is raised on foliate carved cabriole legs, terminating on ball & claw feet to the front, with sabre legs to the rear.

The Hepplewhite design was a very popular style during the late Georgian period in England designed by the famous cabinetmaker, George Hepplewhite. One characteristic that is seen in many of his designs is a shield-shaped chair back, where an expansive shield appeared in place of a narrower splat design. George Hepplewhite (who lived between 1727 to 1786) is regarded as having been one of the “big three” English furniture makers of the 18th century, along with Thomas Sheraton and Thomas Chippendale.

Condition Report:

Nominal old use marks to the leading edges, frames and legs, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The seat has been newly upholstered in top quality full grain burgundy red leather; therefore, the upholstery is in excellent and clean condition, with no marks, free from wear and tear. If you do not like the colour/style of the upholstery, we can recover the seat in a fabric of your choice. If you would like the seat recovered, please contact us for a quote.
