Pair Of 18th Century Mahogany Ladderback Chairs

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Holmes Antiques

An extremely rare pair of well drawn 18th Century Mahogany Ladderback Chairs of good colour, probably by Giles Grendey.

The chair backs here are of very unusual form, with the top rail mirroring that of the rails below. The identical chair back design can be seen on set of Chairs bearing the Grendey label, documented in the book ''Marked London Furniture'' by Christopher Gilbert. These Chairs differ from the Chairs photographed in the book when in comes to the legs. Rather than the more common straight square leg, these chairs are fitted with a carved cabriole leg to the front with shell & acanthus carved to the knee, terminating in a scroll foot.

It is likely that these chairs were made for a country house, and a more elaborate design of this fashionable type of chair was commissioned.

Circa 1745.

The Chair seats have been fully reupholstered and are ready for a final cover of choice material.
