A Fine and Rare Early 18th Century George I Gilt Gesso Pier or Console Mirror.

In the manner of John Belchier

The shaped bevelled mirror plate sits within an upright rectangular moulded frame decorated with fine leaf carving, lobed corners and a shaped apron carved with scrolls and centred by a shell. The highly decorative cresting is profusely carved with foliage, central mask and flanked by Prince of Wales's feathers into acanthus scrolls.

Originating in early 18th-century Britain, George I pier mirrors were tall, narrow mirrors designed to hang on wall piers between windows, characterised by low-relief carved gesso decoration, moulded borders, and water-gilded timber surfaces.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or soft timber frameworks covered in multiple layers of gessoa mixture of chalk and animal hide gluewhich was finely carved before gold leaf was applied using traditional water-gilding techniques.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-punched or carved gesso detailing, original mercury-amalgam glass showing silvering oxidisation or dark speckling, and hand-sawn backboards secured with historical iron fixings.
