£9,600    $11,751    €11,430
A rare set of twelve George III mahogany tablet-back dining chairs attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and dating to circa 1790. Comprising two carver armchairs and ten side chairs, the backs with box and ebony strung fiddleback mahogany rails flanked by fielded uprights with pointed terminals, on slender turned tapering legs to the front and slightly tapering square outsplayed legs to the rear with Gothic inspired corner brackets. The armchairs have elegant downswept and out curving arms on turned baluster shaped supports. All with comfy cover-over seats newly upholstered in green hide leather with close nailed studs. Previously owned by Liverpool University and inscribed by them to the underside.

All in solid mahogany, marks consistent with age and use including old repairs to the top rail of one armchair, and the fronts of the arms, chairs all solid with no movement in the joints. One armchair slightly lower than the other.
