Japanese Iron Box By The Komai Company Of Kyoto

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this magnificent quality Meiji period 1868-1912 , damascened iron box by the highly regarded Komai company, the large and heavy box stands upon a pierced and shaped base that has been decorated with carp leaping amongst waves, the sides of the box are decorated with a multitude of ferns, grasses and flora, the lid is delightful and depicts a heavily onlaid mixed metal bijin stood against a fence, a ponderous expression upon her face, with a lakeside scene as the backdrop, the bijin is dressed in traditional highly decorative silk kimono with her hair tied impeccably, a flight of birds encircle the edge of the lid, the gilded interior further decorated with pavilions amidst a mountainous backdrop, whilst the underside of the box is decorated with phoenix amid flora and carries the gilt Komai signature seal, a seriously impressive box from the leading Meiji period maker of damascened iron wares.
