Set of Six Fine Welsh Oak Farmhouse Chairs, Circa 1770

Description

A rare genuine set of six Welsh farmhouse chairs in a figured medium-colour native oak and in the "Country Chippendale" style. The shaped crest rails sit above shaped back splats with pierced heart motif and flanked by square uprights, over solid seats with moulded edges raised on square tapered legs united by stretchers.

Good untouched colour and surface patination.

North-west Wales, circa 1770.

These chairs were purchased around 1910 to furnish a typical "Welsh Farmhouse Kitchen" in Tarvin Lodge, Tarvin, Cheshire. Photographs showing them in situ were used as a family postcards, with one illustrated in "Welsh Furniture 1250-1950: A Cultural History of Craftsmanship and Design", plate 1339. Both photographs are shown here.
