17th Century Tuscan Wall Mirror

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Walton House Antiques

The flowers and fruit urn to the top of the mirror sit above acanthus leaf decoration surmounted on a robust rococo outer frame with scrolling acanthus leaves and large flower heads. The apron is profusely carved with scrolled acanthus leaves that intertwine above clasps of fruit and nuts. The period mercury plate is surrounded by a cornucopia of intricately carved petals, fruits, nuts and bunches of grapes. The mirror was most probably carved in Florence, the wealthy capital city of Tuscany during the reign of Cosimo III de'' Medici, (14th August 1642-31st October 1723) Grand Duke of Tuscany who reigned from 1670 to 1723. The frame is profusely carved in lime wood and gilded with parcel gilt and gesso and is very typical of the Florence carvers of the day.
