Walton House Antiques has dated this piece to the 17th Century.
The period mercury plate is surrounded by a cornucopia of intricately carved petals, fruits, nuts and bunches of grapes. The mirror was most probably carved in Florence, the wealthy capital city of Tuscany during the reign of Cosimo III de' Medici, (14th August 1642-31st October 1723) Grand Duke of Tuscany who reigned from 1670 to 1723. The frame is profusely carved in lime wood and gilded with parcel gilt and gesso and is very typical of the Florence carvers of the day.
