Superb Painted and Gilded Armchair

A wonderful carved, painted and gilded armchair with a grand country house look. The chair is painted in grey tinged with green and then gilded in the carved detail. The armchair has been newly upholstered to the highest standard in an Italianate fabric mainly cream with hints of gold, green and red. The red colour has been picked out to back the chair in velvet and also the cushion which is reversible with the main fabric. The chair and the paintwork are in good original condition, there are some knocks but no overpaint and it has a great worn and faded look. The origin of the chair is a bit of a mystery as there are aspects that are very French and some very Italian, but probably Northern Italian. A wonderful statement piece for any room. C.1880.
