Interesting C19th carved oak armchair of classically inspired form .
Large scale carved oak armchair based on the designs of the ancient classical worlds. Closely related in design to Roman curule chairs , a style associate with highest office and used by government and dignitaries.
The base of crossed X form design with carved boss decoration, the solid panel seat supporting the acutely- angled downswept arms also with carved volute or corbel features.
The rear lumbar support composed of a well-carved bold cross-over splat with a central carved boss . The broad overhanging top-rail of concave form being of figured burr or pollard oak with incised carved decoration comprising classical anthemion or honeysuckle motifs .
In excellent original condition with no damage or breaks . Consistent rich hue and patina to the solid oak frame .
