This is a fine quality antique Victorian ebonised inlaid occasional chair, painted in the chinoiserie manner, decorated with stunning mother-of-pearl inlay and gold motifs, circa 1850, in good original condition.

Description:

This is a fine quality antique Victorian ebonised inlaid occasional chair, painted in the chinoiserie manner, decorated with stunning mother-of-pearl inlay and gold motifs, circa 1850, in good original condition. The chair boasts profuse mother-of-pearl inlay, depicting butterflies and flowers, and gilt foliate motif detail to the back, legs and seat frame. The chair comprises a shaped back, with central shaped vertical splat. The back connects on shaped supports to the seat frame. The seat retains its original canework, which is not missing any pieces and is very comfortable to sit on. The front of the seat frame features a serpentine design. The chair rests on cabriole legs to the front and sabre legs to the rear.

External Height = 82.2cm or 32” or 2ft 8”

External Width = 44.6cm or 17½” or 1ft 5½”

External Depth = 47.5cm or 18¾” or 1ft 6¾”

Seat Height = 40.9cm or 16” or 1ft 4”

Seat Width = 42.6cm or 16¾” or 1ft 4¾”

Seat Depth = 35.9cm or 14” or 1ft 2”

Back Height = 41.2cm or 16¼” or 1ft 4¼”

Condition Report:

This side chair is in good original condition. Minor old use marks, scuffs, scratches and general ageing to the finish are present to the chair frame. It has evidently been used over their many years of service (please see photos), but nothing significant considering their age. The mother-of-pearl inlay is original and there are no missing pieces. The seat is also original, with no missing cane work or holes; it is comfortable to sit on. It remains very attractive, rare decorative item, which is also functional. The chair is solid in joint and ready to use.
