A William IV Mahogany Desk Chair

Description

An unusual William IV desk chair or cockfighting chair, the toprail a padded and buttoned oxbow over curved acanthus supports to the shaped stuffover buttoned seat in dark red leather, on turned supports terminating with gilt brass casters. English circa 1835.

Condition: Excellent, the chair is solid and in great condition, with good colour to the timber and the leather, which we believe is the original. The leather shows some wear but it is in very good condition.

The unusual shape of this chair suggests that it might have been used for watching cockfighting, however the date of its manufacture coincides with the date that cockfighting was made illegal in the United Kingdom, by the Cruelty to Animals Act, 1835, although it was not banned in Scotland until 1895.
