Rare Pair Of African Golden Walnut Chairs

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A rare and interesting pair of Edwardian period chairs. The chairs are made of Golden Walnut, this is recorded in two labels on the reverse of the chairs which state: ''Golden Walnut from West Africa introduced by Sir Alfred L. Jones KCMG''. I have never seen this wood before and can find no record of the use of it anywhere else and thus these were most likely a special commission. The wood is heavy and gives a pleasing grain and colour. The style of the chairs is typically Edwardian with elements of Sheraton design and Art Nouveau. The pair are in excellent condition, are extremely good quality and retain the original green leather upholstery, slightly worn at the corners. A real one off pair of chairs with great decorative impact and a story to tell. C.1910.
