19th Century Continental Alabaster Box with Dog

19th century
For Sale by TJR Trading
Description

This is a 19th Century Continental alabaster box. I believe it to be either French or Italian. It is surmounted by a carved figure of a seated spaniel dog. The box is of rectangular form with carved detail to the lid, sides and supports.

Some elements appear to have been re-glued in the past, in particular the blocks on the underside of the lid, and the feet/supports. Alabaster is a soft material so there is some wear to most of the box and a few small chips. There are also some losses to the brown pigment.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century Continental alabaster box is a decorative storage casket hand-carved from translucent alabaster stone, produced primarily in regions such as Italy and France during the Victorian era.

These items are carved from solid blocks of alabaster, a fine-grained gypsum or calcite mineral, using chisels and hand tools to create incised patterns, relief figures, and fitted lids.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural stone veining, slight translucency when held to light, subtle hand-carving irregularities, and natural surface patina or faint discolouration consistent with age.

Place the casket on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or stack of art books to add texture, history, and sculptural interest to modern shelving or vanity displays.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid using water, liquid cleaners, or harsh chemicals, as alabaster is a porous mineral susceptible to staining and dissolving.
