Untouched Welsh Oak Yoke-back Stick Chair

Description

Welsh oak stick chair of the yoke-back design with a worn black-painted finish. The one-piece armbow with a carved backrest is made from a naturally-shaped bough and terminates in broad circular handrests, and is raised on tall rounded spindles, over a solid semi-circular three-inch thick seat, raised on three splayed rounded legs. Wonderful historical finish and surface. Cardiganshire, west Wales, circa 1730.

Height: 28.75 inches; 73 cms.

Seat height: 15.5 inches; 39.25 cms.

Width of arm at front: 32 inches; 80 cms.

Seat board width: 23.25 inches; 59 cms.

Seat board depth: 13.5 inches; 34.25 cms.

This is the ultimate in Welsh stick chairs and surely one of the last to have remained in an old Welsh cottage. It is untouched, completely natural finish with just the polish of use. It is not a very comfortable chair by modern standards but it is a supreme example of folk sculpture!
