Fine and rare set of six Regency mahogany chairs in the Gothic taste; the arcaded and channelled backs with lancet and trefoil cresting-rails; the stuff-over seats on frames with arched spandrels and on spirally-turned fore-legs. The mellow brass-nailed parliamentary green hide seats date from 1969 when the chairs were sold in London.
No exact parallel has so far been traced for the distinctive design of these chairs, but a number of elements appear in the finely-coloured plates of 'The Repository of Arts', a work published in monthly parts by Rudolf Ackermann between 1809 and 1828. Ackerman, described as an 'arbiter of taste and influential populiser of what was fashionable at the time and presenting it to the public', drew on the work of leading designers of the time such as George Smith, Thomas Hope and George Bullock. The Gothic style features heavily in the latter issues, reflecting an increasing fascination for the Picturesque.
John Beazor Antiques is a family firm, established in 1875 and based in Cambridge since 1940. We are a traditional antiques shop, but very much in the 21st century. We deal in 18th and early 19th century furniture, barometers and clocks. We choose our stock for its originality and for the quality of its colour, patination and design.
We are members of the BADA. We do not exhibit at fairs preferring to deal from our Cambridge shop where we hold an Open Weekend every November.
