Yolanda Gray Antiques has dated this piece to the 18th Century.
The chairs are constructed of solid mahogany and feature a serpentine top rail, above a pierced fretwork central splat, flanked by vertical rails. There are two different back designs to the side chairs, but they compliment each other very well and are nominally similar (one is a narrower and straighter design, the other curvier and more rounded). Incorporating a drop-in seat design, the seat frames are finely moulded. The seats have been newly upholstered in top quality hardwearing silk damask upholstery, with traditional hessian material to the underside. Therefore, the seats are in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. The seats are firm but comfortable; you do not sink into the seat. The chairs rest on straight legs to the front, with sabre legs to the rear and feature ‘H’ shape stretchers for additional strength.

The armchairs are individual chairs, but compliment the design of the singles, with the addition of two splayed, shaped arms, secured by shaped vertical supports. One armchair is notably larger than the other. The larger armchair features a pierced fretwork central splat that is very similar to the three side chairs with the more rounded splat design. The smaller armchair boasts a more unique central splat design, with elegant, sweeping lines and gentle curves. However, it does not detract from the other chairs. Both armchairs feature single side stretchers and twin horizontal stretchers.

Condition Report:
The chairs are in good original condition. This is a harlequin (matched) set, incorporating period Georgian chairs and some later Victorian (circa 1880) dining chairs. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges, frames and legs, but nothing significant considering the age of them. The seats have been newly upholstered; therefore, the fabric is in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. If you do not like the colour/style of the upholstery, we can re-cover the seats in a fabric of your choice. If you would like the seats re-covered, please contact us for a quote. The chairs retain the original polish; therefore, they boast a fantastic patination and colour, which cannot be recreated if the chairs were re-polished. This is a harlequin (matched) set, assembled from other incomplete sets. The chairs are solid in joint; they do not wobble and they are ready to use.
