Description

This is a very fine and aesthetically beautiful cabinet and is signed inside by the maker, 'charles william schofield july 5th 1827. We have pictures of the signature and date which are written in superb copper plate style synonymous with the period.

A cabinet of this age is particularly rare and would have been made for a gentleman of the time. It is built to a very high standard and would have appealed then, as now, to a connoisseur. This is one of the earliest I have handled in many years!

The cabinet is fashioned from beautifully figured honduras mahogany and standing on short turned legs has fifteen drawers. Each drawer has the original glazed frame top all being of good and precise fit. The original lock is fully functional and is fitted with a key. The drawers have been repapered over the base layer of cork.

Width. 18 inches.

Front to back. 17.75 inches.

Width. 16 inches.

Front to back. 15.5 inches.

Overall depth. 1.75 inches.

Originally designed to hold and display a collection of british insects this cabinet will serve a multitude of collecting pursuits admirably and will please the eye in any environment ancient or modern.
