Rare Near Set of 4 Yew Wood Windsor Chairs William Wheatland Retford

19th century
Description

A Rare nearly matching set of four low back Windsor Chairs in Yew Wood with Elm seats, these are from the early period of the working life of William Wheatland who set up a workshop in Retford in Beardsall Row in the early years of the 19th century later moving Gamston c 1825 to take a Methodist class soon this class became larger than expected so William decieded to find somewhere to build a small chapel, land became available a tiny village was being construced this village was to be called Rockley as their was an outcrop of large rocks nearby, William bought the land and built his chapel in c 1827, sadly within 3 years he was to go bankrupt and left the chair workshop and chapel, this was then taken over by the next chair maker of Rockley George Nicholson, although Fred Walker who had been with Wheatland for some time took over the responsebility of Chapel leader and Preacher. These chairs bear some charectoristics of William Wheatcrofts early work, ie shaped crook underarm supports, a scratch carved ring around the edge of the seats, and the upright spindles mortised through the seat.

all four chairs are in excellent condition with a pleasing colour and patina.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
