This harlequin (matched) set consists of 2 armchairs and 8 side chairs.
Below, there is a bank of refined turned spindles, secured by two horizontal bowed rails. The seats have been hand rushed and they are in good condition. The base of the chairs features lovely turned legs. Six of the side chairs feature a simple turned stretcher to the front, while the other two side chairs and the armchairs boast bulbous turned stretchers to the front. The front stretchers are heavy and turned – a good sign of quality. The chairs feature twin connecting turned side stretchers and a rear stretcher; which ensures they stand firm on the ground. All chairs are made from top quality ash and elm and are firm and solid.

This design of chair was originally made in the Lancashire and Cheshire region of the North West of England, but was commonly known as a “Lancashire” chair. They were made for use in kitchens in simple country homes around the North West area during the time of the great mills in the Industrial Revolution.

Condition Report:
These chairs are in good original condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the chair frames and feet but nothing significant considering the age of them. This is a harlequin set of chairs, which means the side chairs are a matched set. Therefore, there will therefore be small variations in sizes. The chairs boast good quality hand woven rush seats. The rush seating is present and in good condition. The chairs boast a stunning rich colour and patination; it cannot be re-created by re-polishing or with new chairs. The chairs are heavy in weight, which is a good sign of quality. The chairs are well constructed, solid in joint, sit firm on the ground and are ready to use.
