Welsh Ash Comb-back Stick Chair, Circa 1800

Description

An archetypal Welsh chair of particularly individual form and detail and with a wonderful surface. A true collector's chair.

The main timber is ash, with a beech comb and blackthorn armbow. The seat shows sections of bark at the front and rear, with a hollow underneath from a side branch.

The back spindles support a broad curved comb, over a sweeping three-part armbow with shaped ends and supported on turned front posts. The thick seat is slightly shaped and raised on four legs, the front two turned, joined by H-shaped stretchers.

There is a good rake to the back and to the legs and a good splay to the arm supports.

The surface is nicely worn through historical layers of blue, black and brown paint, with a fine overall colour and patination.

One short spindle and two parts of the stretcher replaced. There is wear and worm damage to the legs.
