Late 19thc English Set of Four Mahogany Chairs in the French Empire Style with Superb Ormolu Mounts

Description

An excellent quality late 19th century English set of four highly decorative mahogany chairs in the French Empire style with superb ormolu mounts by EH Kahn & Co, London.

This set of chairs consists of of two armchairs and two single chairs (possibly originally part of a larger set) upholstered in a pale blue and gold fabric, the chairs consisting of foliate and rosette ormolu mounts to the rounded and moulded top rail with ormolu rosettes to either end.

This leads down to a square upholstered back with outer moulded rail also with foliate and rosette ormolu mounts, the arms being shaped with ormolu rosette mount supported by a superb finely cast ormolu sphinx figure.

This leads down to the upholstered seat with front and side moulded rails also with ormolu foliate decoration with rosette mounts to the centre and to each end.

The chairs are supported on finely cast ormolu monopod legs to the front of winged lion heads with paw feet and sabre legs to the back, the chair backs having a recessed and upholstered panel.

A similar example of a settee with the identical design and ormolu mounts etc. can be found in the book: 'Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall' by Christopher Gilbert, pages 275-277, plate 333.

This set of chairs are all in excellent condition for age, are all of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
