Here is a fine quality antique set of 8 English mahogany Georgian Hepplewhite style dining chairs, constructed in the early Victorian period, circa 1850, in good condition. The set consists of six side chairs and two armchairs. The chairs are constructed of solid mahogany and feature a moulded shield back design; incorporating a central carved wheat motif pediment above five finely executed pierced moulded shaped splats, flanked by moulded vertical rails. The stuff over seats have been newly upholstered in top quality hard wearing taupe structured wool and cotton upholstery, finished with cream coloured braid, with traditional webbing and hessian material to the underside. Therefore the seats are in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. The seats are firm but comfortable; you do not sink into the seat.

The chairs are raised on tapering moulded legs, terminating on spade feet to the front, with sabre legs to the rear, united by a “H” stretcher for additional strength. The armchairs mirror the design of the singles, with the addition of two splayed reeded arms, secured by shaped vertical supports. The underside of the chairs retains their wooden slat corner supports; later chairs were constructed with solid corner blocks. Please note, this is a true set of chairs; they have not been matched together from smaller sets of similar chairs.

The Hepplewhite design was a very popular style during the late Georgian period in England designed by the famous cabinetmaker, George Hepplewhite. One characteristic that is seen in many of his designs is a shield-shaped chair back, where an expansive shield appeared in place of a narrower splat design.

Condition Report:

These dining chairs are in good condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges, frames and legs, but nothing significant considering the age of them. The seats have been newly upholstered; therefore the fabric is in excellent and clean condition, with no marks.
