Description

Late 19th century set of 4 Empire revival side chairs. The drawing room chairs have a curved top rail with quite an elaborate casting beneath this with winged sphinx, swags, tails, ribbons, birds and this mount is curved and follows the form of the top. There are 2 cast heads depicting a Goddess to either side and a large central splat has another casting depicting a female scholar with a globe, books, urns and scrolls sitting on an x-frame chair. The large stuffover seat is domed and has been upholstered in rich red damask. A deep apron can be seen to the front with a large casting depicting leaves and fruit entwined around an extended stem, and finishing with an acorn finial and a sunburst in the middle. There are 2 small cherubs at each side left and right and a small C scroll just above it to finish where the top rail comes down to join the seat. The back legs are square, tapering and slightly out swept. The front legs are mahogany in a slight sabre as they head towards the floor.
