Antique Set of 12 Twelve English Georgian Hepplewhite Style Mahogany Dining Chairs (Circa 1920)

1900 - 1920
Description

Here is a fine quality antique set of 12 mahogany Georgian Hepplewhite style dining chairs, circa 1920, in good condition.

Summary:

• Circa: 1920

• Number of chairs: 12

• In the style of Hepplewhite period (c. 1775 – 1800)

• Provenance: England, UK

• Wood: Mahogany

• Arched moulded top rail

• Fluted centre pierced back splat

• Moulded vertical rails

• Moulded drop-in seat frame

• Newly upholstered seats

• Silk damask upholstery

• Tapering block front legs

• Sabre rear legs

• Original polish

• Good quality

• Solid in joint

• True set (not matched together)

• Free delivery to England, Wales & southern Scotland*

• Free 14 days UK returns policy

The chairs are constructed of solid mahogany and feature an arched moulded top rail, with a finely executed pierced open fretwork fluted central splat, flanked by moulded vertical rails. Incorporating a drop-in seat design, the seat frames are finely moulded. The seats been newly upholstered in top quality hard wearing silk damask upholstery and hessian material to the underside. Therefore the seats are in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. The chairs are raised on tapering block legs to front, with sabre legs to the rear, united by three stretcher bars for additional strength. Please note, these are a true set of chairs, they have not been matched together from smaller sets of similar chairs.

The Hepplewhite design was a very popular style during the late Georgian period in England designed by the famous cabinetmaker, George Hepplewhite. One characteristic that is seen in many of his designs is a shield-shaped chair back, where an expansive shield appeared in place of a narrower splat design. George Hepplewhite (who lived between 1727 to 1786) is regarded as having been one of the "big three" English furniture makers of the 18th century, along with Thomas Sheraton and Thomas Chippendale.

Condition Report:

These dining chairs are in good condition having been wax polished. The chairs boast the original polish; and as such, there are nominal old use marks and minor colour variation to the chair frames and leading edges. Importantly, the chairs are free from any breaks to the backs or legs. The seats have been newly upholstered; therefore the fabric is in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. These are a true set from the day of their construction (they have not been matched together from smaller sets of similar chairs). The chairs are solid in joint; they do not wobble and they are ready to use.

Please note, it is becoming more difficult to find large sets (such as 12) of antique dining chairs (even later examples), which are also in good condition, in the market placed today.
