Victorian Chippendale Style Gilt Overmantel Mirror

18th century
Description

Circa 1880, wonderful stylish Victorian Chippendale style gilt overmantel mirror, with a trade label on the back for Paul Coutts Antiques which was in the Grassmarket of Edinburgh. The mirror is carved giltwood in the Chinese Chippendale style. Similar diagrams occur frequently in the Chippendale directory. It is profusely carved from top to bottom, crowned at the top by a wonderful gazebo with a carved finial, and from this are swags and tails and various shaped mirrors and columns. In the centre is another small gazebo, with a pagoda top in the form of flower heads. On either side are carved, gilded Ho Ho birds sitting on rocky outcrop which sits on a Rococo swag with various foliage carving.
