Early C20th Chinese hardwood open fret-work framed wall mirror with carved boxwood decoration .

Stylish Chinese carved huali /rosewood framed mirror with interesting contrasting carved boxwood block vignettes featuring grass-hopper or cricket and foliage motifs. The open-fret frame centre with a quatrefoil shaped bevelled plate mirror . The top fitted with a decorative lacquered brass fretted 'hanging' bracket . The boarded back fitted with eyelets to enable concealed hanging .

Throughout Chinese history and culture , crickets have symbolised wisdom and prosperity ,and the singing of crickets revered . Crickets lay hundreds of eggs and their fertility coincides with the traditional Chinese belief that having many children is a symbol of vitality , happiness and abundance.
