Victorian Set of 12 Twelve Mahogany Carved Back Upholstered Dining Chairs Attributable to James Shoolbred & Co. (Circa 1880)

19th century
Description

Here is an example of a top quality set of 12 antique Victorian carved mahogany dining chairs, circa 1880, in excellent original condition. Although not stamped, the design of these chairs is attributable to the renowned furniture makers, James Schoolbred & Co. of London. The chairs feature a shaped moulded top rail, incorporating a carved flower enriched with fine punch work. Likewise, the supporting shaped central rail below features a similar carved design. The carved top and central rail makes this set of chairs more refined than the standard Victorian balloon back chair design. The chairs boast serpentine stuff-over seats, which have been newly upholstered in top quality hard wearing taupe shade wool & cotton upholstery. The chairs stand on ring turned fluted front legs, sabre rear legs and the seat frame boasts an elegant reeded front rail. This set of chairs has been constructed with the best quality mahogany timber available at the time; the chairs are heavy in weight and extremely sturdy. This set of chairs has a fantastic depth of colour and patination displaying a lovely rich red and brown mahogany colour.

Provenance:

The design of these chairs is attributable to the renowned furniture makers, James Schoolbred & Co. of London. James Shoolbred & Co. who was based in Tottenham Court Road London was a highly esteemed & respected furniture manufactures and retailer business between the years 1820 – 1931. They made and sold some of the best quality furniture during the Victorian and Edwardian period. James Shoolbred was also granted a Royal warrant by the mid-1880s, which gives an indication of the quality of furniture they produced.

Condition Report:

This set of chairs is in excellent original condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the chairs but nothing significant considering the age of the chairs. This set of chairs has been constructed with the best quality mahogany timber available at the time; the chairs are heavy in weight and extremely sturdy. The stuff over seats has been newly re-upholstered in hardwearing beige structured wool & cotton upholstery. The upholstery is therefore clean, free from wear and marks. The seat frames and chair joints are also solid. The chairs boast a rich red and brown mahogany colour and patination. As they boast the original polish, they have a fantastic colour and patination. This rich original colour cannot be re-created if the chairs have been re-polished. There are also no breaks to the backs, frames or legs of any of the chairs. All chairs are solid in joint and are ready to be used.
