Georgian Antiques has dated this piece to the 1870s.
The wood above and below this is chamfered in the Gothic style. There is a solid mahogany seat which is hinged towards the front. Underneath at the back there is a small clip to hold the chair in position. When the chair is unhinged and folded over it forms a neat sized set of 4 steps. Each of the shelves is heavily impregnated with the marks from shoes over time. Normally these chairs are in oak and it is unusual to find one in mahogany in such good condition.
