Here is a good quality antique Regency carved gilded convex butlers wall mirror, circa 1820, in very good condition. The mirror is surmounted by a well-carved eagle pediment, flanked by acanthus-mounted leaves to the shoulders of the mirror. The oval gilt wood frame incorporates the original gesso balls around the original ebonised reeded slip frame that houses the original convex mounted glass mirror plate. The base of the mirror terminates on a very pretty foliate acanthus leave & floral apron. The back of the mirror frame retains its original backboards, along with the original chain.

Mirrors of this period and design were usually constructed of pine, incorporating a gesso, base before a gilded finish was applied. The carving to the frame on this mirror is crisp with a pleasantly balanced gilded finish to produce a lovely patination.

This style of mirror was used in large wealthy houses, in prominent positions to not only act as a mirror but also enable the butlers or serving staff to see who was coming into the house or a particular room, without peering around the corner or accidentally being seen themselves. The mirror would act as a tool and a cue to provide timely service in that particular room. This is why these mirrors are sometimes referred to as “butlers mirrors”.

Condition Report:
This mirror is in very good condition considering its age. The frame, the carvings, gesso balls, reeded slip frame, the glass and backboards are all original. Nominal old use marks, with some minor rubbing to the frame. Importantly, there is no damage or missing pieces to the carved eagle or acanthus leaf supports or frieze. The back of the mirror frame retains its original backboards, along with the original chain. This item is ready to be used.
