A Rare Pair of George Walton Ash Abingwood Chairs 1897

Description

A rare pair of George Walton ash Abingwood Chairs 1897 designed by Walton in conjunction with Charles Rennie Mackintosh for the billiard room at Miss Cranston's Buchanan Street tearooms in Glasgow. These remarkable chairs are from an important group of chairs far ahead of their time in style and execution designed in their first major commission by Walton , who was responsible for the furniture, and Mackintosh the room and furnishings.

The huge success of his design meant commercial copies being sold both by Liberty's and by William Birch in High Wycombe.

Provenance : Sold by Miss Cranston in 1919 to the Robertson family who owned an important jewellers in Sauchiehall Street and Hill House in Helensburgh designed by Mackintosh . When Hill House was sold to the Royal Scottish Institute Of Architects the chairs came to Dorset in 1973 where they remained until purchased by us last year.

Size: 27 ins wide 21 ins deep 32 ins high
