Yolanda Gray Antiques has dated this piece to the 1860s.
The underside of the seats is finished with a gadroon apron. Elegantly shaped cabriole legs that feature scroll acanthus leaf carvings to the knee of the legs, terminate in pronounced ball and claw feet. The backs of the chairs are chamfered; this is a sign of top quality. The two armchairs feature a similar design; they feature stunning carved eagle heads to the ends of the shaped arms, with carved acanthus leaf scroll ends at the point of connecting to the vertical chair back. This is a true set of chairs (they have not been matched together) and they are extremely comfortable. The chairs are heavy in weight; this is a further sign of quality. These chairs were made by the renowned cabinetmaker S&H Jewell of 131-2 High Holborn, London, W.C.1. They specialised in boardroom, library and dining furniture and was based in the Holborn area of London; they were recorded as cabinetmakers from 1830 onwards.
