Set of 6 Arts & Crafts Clissett Type Ash & Elm Dining Chairs C.1880.

Description

Fine set of six late 19th.c. ash and elm English Arts and Crafts dining chairs c.1880, unstamped but identical to those by the 19th.c. Herefordshire chair maker Philip Clissett (1818-1913). An unusual and distinctive design with bobbin turned spindles and double stretchers to the backrest over a solid elm seat panel with shaped apron. Turned front legs with shaped foot joined by a repeat of the double stretcher. Lovely mellow colour and excellent condition.

Clissett’s unmannered designs and maintenance of traditional chair making techniques (using green ash hand turned on a pole lathe) led to him become a celebrated example to the artists of the budding Arts & Crafts movement. Charles Rennie Mackintosh is believed to have used Clissett’s chairs in several of his early interiors.

Dimensions: width 18", depth 15", height 35".
