Pair of Early 20thc Walnut Open Arm Library Chairs, in the 'Gillows' Manner

A pair of early 20thc walnut open library chairs with shepherd's crook arms, in the 'Gillows' manner, in the early 18thc style.

The backs are concaved in a shield shape with burr walnut veneers and the arms are a 'shepherd's crook' design which gives an unusual appearance and a typical 'old English' style.

The seats are circular in shape and are covered with a reddish/brown leather which compliment the frames.

This pair of chairs are an early Georgian style (1720) with cabriole shell carved legs leading down to a claw & ball foot.

A very similar example can be found in the book 'Gillows of Lancaster 1730-1840' page 231 by Susan E Stuart. This states that an identical chair was drawn in the Estimate Sketchbook June 1827 and made in various woods.

This chair design is taken from the George II chair at Boyton House in Wiltshire illustrated in 'The Dictionary of English Furniture' Vol I by Percy Maquoid & R Edwards, page 237 fig 91.

Gillows produced this model of chair in the early 20thc in various woods, including mahogany, walnut and yew.

These chairs are structurally sound and in very good condition and can go straight into a home.
