Large Georgian Campaign Writing Box with Pop Up Mechanism

Description

We are delighted to offer this wonderful and imposing brass bound rosewood campaign writing slope from the early 19th century George 3rd period , this fine and large box would probably have been used by a high ranking military person for use in the field , the box has inset military side carrying handles, brass bound edges for protection and is further decorated with brass stringing , the underside is lined for protecting the surface you rest this heavy box on .

You open the box to reveal a generous writing slope with replacement scribe, housing period inkwells and lidded compartments for pens and stationary , both flaps lift to reveal further storage space , the unusual feature on this box is the pop up bank of drawers at the rear giving the box further drawers and the feeling of using an actual desk , the rosewood drawer fronts complete with original gilded handles , the pop up drops down by releasing a pair of sprung loaded stays either side.

There is a nice old provenance paper pinned on the inside of the box listing the first owners , starting with Thomas Vaisey of Stratton (1793-1872)a great age for that period ?

The condition is gorgeous and exactly as we found it in a grand house in Sussex , probably as good condition as these type of boxes gets without major restorations !!
