This is a very good quality pair of antique English Victorian ash & elm smokers’ bow armchairs, circa 1880. Each armchair features a shaped gallery back, which makes these chairs extremely comfortable and practical for everyday use. Below the gallery back there is a bank of turned spindles and at each side, good wide splayed arms that helps for gripping the chairs. Each chair features a wonderful elm saddle shaped seat, which displays the original colour and patination of the grain. Below the chair seats, double “H” stretchers connect the turned legs, which gives the chairs added strength and robustness. Each chair offers the classic smokers bow shape and has good proportions. Each chair is very comfortable, solid in joint and has a superb colour / patination. These chairs are commonly called 'Captains' chairs but really they were smokers’ bows, which were used to relax in and have a smoke at the end of a hard days work.
Condition Report:
This matched pair of smokers’ bow armchairs is in excellent original condition. Importantly, there are no breaks to the spindles, arms or legs. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges nothing significant considering the age of the item. Each chair boasts the original polish and patination, which means they have a fantastic colour. Free of woodworm, solid in joint and ready to use.
