Set of Six Unusual Victorian Chairs

A superb set of six highly unusual Victorian dining or salon chairs. The chairs are ebonised with applied bronze mounts and each has a hand painted porcelain plaque in the top rail. The chairs stand on finely turned front legs with an elaborately shaped profile around the seat, the legs have applied bronze rose shaped roundels where they join the seat and there is also one in the centre of the seat front rail surrounded by carving. The chair back is carved and shaped into a lyre shape with more applied bronze stylised rose roundels and with a large central bronze applique. The top rail has in the centre mounted within a bronze frame a handpainted porcelain plaque depicting a side profile picture of a classical maiden, this is an individual and subtly different maiden for each chair. The chairs have been newly upholstered to the highest standard in cream and turquoise silk, with the cream silk pleated around the seat edge, the seats are all deep filled and sprung.

I have never seen this type of chair before where the design includes applied bronze and porcellain mounts, and the style does bare some resemblance to American furniture from the period, but they must have been made by a leading manufacturer and probably as a one off commission. The set are all in excellent condition and have a very stylish look which would work in a period interior or in a contemporary interior. C.1860.
