Pair of Continental Side Chairs

A fine and interesting pair of walnut chairs, finely carved all over in the manner of Louis XV. The front and back legs terminate in hoof feet, with carved acanthus leaves at the top and base. The chairs have a carved and shaped apron with floral and shell motifs. The Chair backs are elaborately carved, on a ladder form, with shells, scrolls, hare bells, and acanthus leaves. The whole are in good condition, of a generous size and of a rich patina and colour. The seats are sprung and upholstered in Seventeenth or Eighteenth century tapestry fragments which may well be the original early nineteenth century covers. The chairs have a real old chateau style and presence. C.1820
