This Georgian vernacular wall box is a piece of antique Welsh pine furniture made around 1800, likely from Pembrokeshire. The object takes the form of a large salt or candle container with a tapered body, a decoratively shaped top backplate featuring a hanging aperture with string, and an unusual downward-sliding sloped hinged lid. The timber displays a dark brown finish with noticeable signs of age and wear, including surface marks and minor tonal variations. It measures 67 cm high, 26.5 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. In a modern home, this piece suits a rustic farmhouse interior and functions well mounted on a wall in a hallway, kitchen, or fireplace alcove for compact storage.

FAQs

In 18th and 19th-century households, hanging boxes were positioned near the hearth to keep salt dry or protect tallow candles from moisture and pests.

These boxes were typically crafted from local pine or softwood using simple joinery techniques, featuring a sloped hinged lid and a pierced backplate for wall mounting.

Authentic pieces display natural signs of age, including hand-carved shaped backplates, oxidised wood tone, period iron hinges, and original hanging aperture wear.

Mount the box on a kitchen or hallway wall to serve as functional storage for small daily items, or display it within a gallery wall as vernacular folk art.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying beeswax polish sparingly while avoiding exposure to direct water or excessive humidity.
