This Georgian mahogany bedside nightstand from circa 1790 combines practical utility with classic English Country House style. Constructed from warm brown timber with visible vertical slatting on the sliding tambour door, the piece incorporates an oval brass drop handle on the single lower drawer and stands upon straight square legs. The frame includes a shaped tray top gallery and an adapted slide-out front revealing an internal flat drawer. Measuring 79 cm high, 49 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, this versatile nightstand functions effectively as a compact bedside cabinet or as a small storage table positioned in an empty corner of a bedroom, hallway, or living space.

FAQs

Originating in the late 18th century, Georgian tambour front bedside cupboards feature flexible wooden slats that roll horizontally to conceal interior compartments, combined with a raised tray top gallery.

These pieces were primarily constructed from solid mahogany, featuring hand-cut joinery, brass hardware, and slatted tambour panels supported by heavy canvas fabric.

Authentic examples exhibit hand-planed surfaces, dovetailed drawer joints, original brass fittings, and signs of age-related patination on the mahogany timber.

A Georgian nightstand functions as an occasional side table in a living room or as a standalone bedroom cabinet alongside minimalist lighting and contemporary artwork.

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry cloth and apply natural beeswax polish occasionally, ensuring the item is positioned away from direct sunlight and radiator heat sources.
