Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Hand-painted folk art boxes were historically crafted from wood or paperboard to store delicate personal items, haberdashery, or trinkets. Popular across nineteenth-century Europe, these containers featured hand-rendered botanical or pictorial designs reflective of regional artisan traditions.

These boxes were typically constructed using bentwood, turned timber, or sturdy pasteboard, held together with brass studs, tacks, or wooden pegs. The exteriors were prepared with a gesso or primer base before decorative oil or tempera paints were applied.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural surface wear, faint craquelure in the paint, and internal patination consistent with age. Look for hand-cut joinery, oxidised metal studs, and minor irregularities in the painted decoration indicative of handwork rather than modern stencil techniques.

Display these decorative boxes on a sideboard top, bookshelf, or bedside table to add warm tone and textural interest. Stacking a pair vertically or grouping them alongside studio ceramics creates a refined vignette with contrasting textures.

Dust the surfaces gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush, avoiding wet cleaning solutions that could lift aged paint layers. Keep the items away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent timber movement or pigment fading.
