Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 18th century English oak cabinet is an 18th century Georgian press cupboard in warm brown solid oak with brass hardware. The upper section has a moulded cornice above twin panelled doors with shaped top panels, and the lower chest of drawers includes brass swan-neck handles above simple block feet. The solid timber has a rich, mellow colour throughout. Practical in size at H 190 cm x W 110 cm x D 53 cm, this heavy cabinet suits a traditional country house interior. It provides substantial storage space in a living room, dining room or hallway, accommodating books, linen or tableware while serving as a prominent focal point against a wall.

FAQs

An 18th-century oak press cupboard is a two-part wooden storage piece featuring a top cabinet with doors above a lower section containing drawers. Popular throughout the Georgian era in Great Britain, these functional cupboards were designed primarily to hold household linens, folded clothing, or textiles.

Georgian oak cabinets were constructed using native British oak, utilizing mortise and tenon joinery alongside wooden peg fixings. Drawers feature hand-cut dovetail joints, pine or oak drawer linings, and cast brass hardware such as swan-neck handles and escutcheons.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display signs of hand-planed surfaces, irregular dovetail joints, and hand-sawn timber marks on the reverse panels. Look for natural shrinkage in wide oak boards, dark oxidisation around brass fittings, and original wooden peg joinery.

Place an antique oak press cupboard against a neutral or dark backdrop in a hallway, dining space, or bedroom to create a focal point. Combine the warm timber tones with contemporary artwork, natural linen upholstery, or ceramic decorative pieces to balance historical and modern aesthetics.

Maintain 18th-century oak by applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood and preserve its patina. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting, and dust regularly with a soft dry cloth.
