Fine 19th Century Giltwood Overmantel Mirror Depicting “Anania and Her Chariot”

19th century
Description

A striking and decorative 19th century giltwood overmantel mirror of classical inspiration, surmounted by a richly detailed frieze depicting the mythological scene of “Anania and her chariot.” The finely cast relief features a dynamic procession with figures, horses and chariot, accompanied by a winged figure in flight, all rendered with excellent depth and movement.

The frame is flanked by fluted pilasters with Corinthian capitals, supporting a moulded cornice with dentil detailing, giving the piece strong architectural presence. The original bevelled mirror plate sits neatly within the frame, adding light and depth while complementing the warm gilded finish.

Elegant and imposing, this mirror would sit beautifully above a fireplace, bringing a refined neoclassical feel to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

  • Period19th century
  • SizeH 68 cm (27 in) x W 95 cm (37 in)

This nineteenth century giltwood overmantel mirror draws on classical inspiration. A rich golden finish coats the architectural frame, which incorporates a moulded cornice with dentil detailing above a wide frieze. That central panel displays a relief carving of mythological figures, horses, a chariot, and a winged figure in flight. Fluted pilasters with Corinthian capitals flank the composition on both sides, while ball-like ornaments line the top edge beneath the overhanging crown. An original bevelled glass plate occupies the lower rectangular section, reflecting light into the room. Measuring 68 cm high by 95 cm wide, the mirror hangs practically above a mantelpiece in a drawing room or dining space. The neoclassical design suits both traditional and contemporary interiors, where the warm metallic tones complement existing antique furniture or provide a focal point on a chimney breast.
