FAQs

A Georgian japanned corner cabinet is an 18th-century wall-mounted or standing cupboard finished using European japanning, a technique developed to imitate Asian lacquerware. These cabinets featured triangular backs designed to fit neatly into room corners and were frequently decorated with gilt chinoiserie motifs.

Traditional European japanning involved applying multiple layers of resin-based varnish, often pigmented black or red, over a wooden groundwork such as pine or oak. Raised gilding, shell gold, and painted pigments were then applied to build detailed decorative scenes before a final protective coat was added.

Authentic Georgian pieces display natural surface craquelure, subtle wear to raised gold leaf, and period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails and forged iron or cast brass hardware. The timber back panels usually show historic hand-planing marks and uneven patination.

A japanned corner cabinet works well as a focal point in an unused corner, contrasting against neutral walls or deep heritage paint shades. It provides functional storage while adding warm gilded tones and graphic historical interest to contemporary or eclectic rooms.

Japanned finishes should be kept away from direct sunlight, central heating sources, and moisture to prevent flaking or cracking. Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding commercial chemical polishes, solvent cleaners, or water.
