Set of Four Hoop Back Farmhouse Dining Chairs

19th century
Description

A good quality set of 4 farmhouse dining chairs dating from the late 19th Century. They have nicely shaped elm seats with a hoop back enclosing a beautifully carved centre splat. They stand on turned legs joined by H-stretchers.

The chairs stand approximately 36" (92cm) high. The seats are 14 1/2" (37cm) wide, 15" (38cm) deep and 17 13/4" (45cm) high.

They are in good condition with a lovely colour. There are signs of age and use, some marks and light knocks on the seats and around the legs but nothing detrimental. There have been some old repairs in places but they are generally strong and stable. They have been gently cleaned and polished and are ready for use.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1890s:
Deeply figured solid elm seats: distinctive wide grain of Victorian country chairs.
Steam-bent outer hoops: traditional method used before modern bentwood laminates.
Pierced splat with heart cutout: popular pattern on late 19th-century regional chairs.
Turned baluster legs with H-stretchers: sturdy bracing standard in the late Victorian period.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This set of four farmhouse dining chairs dates from the late 19th century, specifically the year 1890, in the Victorian style. Each piece comprises a curved hoop back enclosing a carved vertical splat, a shaped solid elm wood seat finished in a warm, dark brown timber tone, and turned legs linked by H-stretchers. Visible signs of age and use include light surface knocks and marks on the seats, minor old repairs, and a polished finish. Practical dimensions are 92 cm high, 37 cm wide, and 38 cm deep. These versatile chairs suit everyday dining around a kitchen or breakfast table in a home today. They provide sturdy and stable seating while introducing period character to a dining room or rustic kitchen setting. The traditional silhouette works well alongside various wooden tables, and the compact footprint fits comfortably in moderate spaces.
