Antique Edwardian Mahogany Inlaid Serpentine Corner Display Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

An elegant antique Edwardian mahogany inlaid serpentine corner display cabinet of excellent quality, featuring a beautifully shaped glazed serpentine door, decorative satinwood stringing and an attractive raised architectural cornice. This charming antique corner cabinet has been designed to fit neatly into the corner of a room, providing an elegant display space for porcelain, glassware, ornaments or treasured collections.

The upper section features a distinctive shaped cornice with a raised central pediment and gracefully curved sides, enhanced by delicate decorative inlay. Beneath, the single glazed door has an attractive shaped glass panel, following the elegant contours of the cabinet, and opens to reveal a spacious interior with two shaped shelves, creating three display levels.

The interior retains its original-style green fabric lining, providing an attractive contrasting background for displaying decorative objects. The glazed door is fitted with an elegant brass key and lock, while the beautifully polished mahogany exterior displays lovely colour and attractive satinwood stringing throughout.

The lower section is raised on three elegant slender legs, united by a shaped triangular undertier with delicate inlaid stringing. This additional shelf provides a further display area and complements the graceful proportions of the cabinet.

A particularly attractive and practical antique Edwardian corner display cabinet, combining refined craftsmanship with elegant proportions. Its compact triangular design makes it ideal for a drawing room, dining room, hallway, bedroom or living room, where it will provide an attractive display feature without occupying excessive floor space.

Condition Report

Good antique condition with a lovely polished finish and minor age-related marks consistent with its age. The glazed door retains its brass key and lock, and the cabinet stands on elegant, sturdy legs. The interior fabric lining displays some age-related marks and discolouration, as shown in the photographs.

During the Edwardian era between 1901 and 1910, cabinetmakers favoured lighter, refined designs drawing inspiration from 18th-century Sheraton and Hepplewhite styles, often featuring serpentine fronts, satinwood line inlays, and slender legs.

These cabinets typically feature solid mahogany framework complemented by rich mahogany veneers, boxwood or satinwood stringing, fitted hand-shaped glass panes, and lined internal shelving.

Look for original period brass fitments, precise joinery, hand-cut glass framing, and restrained geometric line inlays rather than heavy Victorian carving.

Position the piece in an underutilised corner or alcove to display porcelain, glassware, or curated books, using its vertical proportions to add structure and warmth to neutral room schemes.

Dust the timber regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly along the wood grain once per year, and clean glass panels by applying cleaner directly to a cloth rather than spraying the frame.
