Marlborough Antiques & Interiors has dated this piece to the Georgian era.
A wonderfully elaborate George III Chinese Chippendale carved mirror, circa 1770, with an exceptionally decorative pierced frame incorporating exotic birds, scrolling foliage and intricate naturalistic ornament.

The boldly carved frame is a particularly attractive example of the Chinese Chippendale taste fashionable in England during the mid-18th century, combining the exuberance of the Rococo with the fanciful, exotic influences of Chinoiserie.
Further exotic birds decorate either side of the frame, their finely detailed plumage beautifully integrated into the elaborate openwork carving.

The lower section is equally decorative, with interlacing C-scrolls, pierced foliate ornament and an unusually sculptural central pendant, giving the mirror a wonderfully balanced yet lively appearance.

At some stage in its history, the frame has been given a distressed, aged finish, which has mellowed to an attractive soft stone and muted gilt colour, highlighting the intricacy and depth of the carving.
The mirror retains its original 18th-century plate glass, displaying extensive foxing, areas of silvering loss and a wonderfully atmospheric patina, all contributing to its considerable decorative charm.
A particularly striking and unusual example of Chinese Chippendale design, reflecting the fashionable English fascination with Oriental-inspired decoration during the reign of George III.
With its elaborate carving, impressive proportions and beautifully aged appearance, this mirror would make a magnificent statement piece in a Georgian drawing room, country house entrance hall or above a period console table. Equally effective in a contemporary interior, where its sculptural quality and faded finish would provide a striking contrast.
Condition: Later distressed finish, with original foxed mirror plate showing age-related deterioration and losses to the silvering.
