Winsor & Newton 'Illuminating Colours & Materials' Artists' Paint Box, C.1890

19th century
Description

A Winsor & Newton 'Illuminating Colours & Materials' artists' paint box. Circa. 1890.

The paintbox is in a wholly original condition, exactly as its last painter left it. The box retains every original paint pot with legible names and ceramic palettes. There are two additional paint powders in the box, one 'Chinese White', the other unmarked. All the named ceramic paint pots save 'Vermillion' have lids very firmly on the paints; these have not been forced open so the contents remain uninspected. Note the Vermillion paint which does open with ease has only been lightly used and remains full.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

  • Period19th century

This Victorian artists' paint box by Winsor & Newton dates from approximately 1890 and is constructed from a warm mid-brown timber with visible wood grain, finished with a hinged lid bearing a green decorative label featuring ornate red and black lettering, a mythical winged creature emblem, and brass hinges and a central keyhole escutcheon. Inside, the fitted wooden interior houses white ceramic paint pots with black-lettered labels, round white ceramic palettes, glass jars containing paint powders, and a lower compartment lined with six white ceramic paint troughs containing dried pigment remnants in shades of blue, white, red, and dark grey, all displaying authentic surface wear and undisturbed residues from past use. The box measures 5.5 cm high, 29.75 cm wide, and 18.5 cm deep when closed. In a contemporary home, this decorative desk accessory works well displayed open on a study shelf, side table, or collector's cabinet to highlight its historic craft materials and charming interior arrangement.
